The University Scene
Waterloo is home to seven colleges and universities, with the two most well-known being:
- University of Waterloo: Known for its strong engineering and computer science programs and robust co-op program, which provides students with valuable work experience.
- Wilfrid Laurier University: This university offers a strong liberal arts education and is mainly known for its business, psychology, and music programs.
Things to do around the city
Outside of academia, there are tons of things for students to see and do in and around the Waterloo and Kitchener areas.
- Uptown Waterloo: Right at the heart of the city, Uptown Waterloo is the place to be for festivals and events, plus an incredible food scene that features cozy cafes, delectable bakeries, and plenty of dining options. It’s a great place to hang out with friends after class and take in the city’s charm.
- The Grand River: To the northeast of the city, you’ll find the Grand River and plenty of opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and other outdoor activities. The river is home to great blue herons, osprey, and turtles, so it’s a great escape when you want to spend some time in nature.
- Winterloo: One of the biggest events of the year, Winterloo is an annual festival that’s completely free! Music to the ears of anyone on a tight budget. The fest breaks up the boredom of winter with horse-drawn rides, ice sculptures, skating, music, food, and more.

All the basics you need to know to get around the city and have fun while you’re a student here.

Waterloo is easy to navigate, and if you don’t have a car, you’ll have no trouble getting around the city using public transit or relying on your trusty bicycle.
